Care-orism: A study day (MAGMA editions 3)

RiVAL: The ReImagining Value Action Lab presents

MAGAMA EDITIONS #3

Care-orism: A study day

Care-orism (noun): Capitalist economic terrorism, justified by claims to care

Sunday, October 9 – 12h-18h

At a secret location in Friedrichshain, Berlin

RiVAL: The ReImagining Value Action Lab is hosting its third salon, this time a day-long affair with informal talks, workshops and discussions. Please be on time and plan to stay for most ifnot all.

Agenda

(subject to changes)

Coffee and tea

Welcome

Hosts Cassie Thornton and Max Haiven will rapidly introduce the concept of solid, liquid and gaseous care-orism, a pun (obviously) that names the way the rhetoric of “care” is used to sell nonsense and sabotage solidarity.

Framing

Magda Jadwiga Härtelova explains what’s wrong with the dominant rhetorics of ‘care’ (and many so-called critical ones as well). She might introduce one possible, outrageous proposal for what radical (thorough, comprehensive), solidarity-driven care politics might look like.

Talk

What would today’s feminism look like if we acknowledged that the healing of a few involves traumatizing a majority of others? June Thunderstorm explores this question with us by sharing a draft of “The Violence of Healing”, her class analysis of “self care” and last work-in-progress with the late great enemy of “wellness” Barbara Ehrenreich, RIP

Talk

Christian Nagler discusses his research on how the tech sector is making California’s carceral state the template for the world

Formatted discussion

Cassie Thornton will organize the speakers and participants to practice The Hologram (peer to peer viral anti-capitalist health protocol practiced from couches around the world) as a method for better understanding the more invisible connections in the room between the people in attendance (including the speakers) and the ideas being presented. The goal is a gentle but deep decomposition of the wall between academic work and how we live and what we must destroy to thrive.

Lunch (provided)

A workshop

The Savages of the 2nd and 3rd World (Zsofia Samodai & Julio Linares) present Notice your body and burn your money, a workshop in which participants will
sense & notice
relations & habits on the
personal & systemic levels with a particular focus on
money and it’s destruction

Closing: formatted discussion

What has been destroyed, what has been created? Group discussion in the format of community of practice, a talking circle style meeting developed for The Hologram.
